About Watchalot
A "30% off" sticker only tells you how far the price is below Takealot's own list price, and a list price can go up the day before a sale. Watchalot records what products actually sell for, day after day, so you can see whether today's price is genuinely low or just looks that way.
How it works
- Once a day, Watchalot checks the prices of popular and top-rated products across Takealot's main departments, plus any product a visitor adds by pasting its link.
- It keeps both the selling price and the list ("was") price, and charts them side by side, so you can see when a discount is measured from an inflated list price.
- Once a product has two weeks of history, it gets a plain verdict: GREAT, GOOD, FAIR or NOT A DEAL, based on its all-time low and what it has usually cost over the last 90 days.
Independent
Watchalot isn't affiliated with Takealot, and no retailer pays for a better verdict. The site is free and supported by ads, which never affect a product's price history or verdict.
Who's behind it
Watchalot is made by Haiko Nieuwoudt, a creative strategist and designer from the Cape Town area with more than ten years in brand, design and performance marketing. Watchalot is one of the small, useful tools he builds on the side.
